Seattle jazz-club outing and unexpected reunion with Zed
After We FellThe Seattle jazz-club outing begins as an attempt at a pleasant evening and becomes a test of Hardin’s restraint when he unexpectedly encounters Zed. The club’s polished setting and the party’s relaxed exploration give way to Hardin’s suspicion and jealousy; although Tessa insists the meeting was unplanned, he chooses to leave rather than escalate the confrontation.
Arrival and the Club
The club is in downtown Seattle, where the streets are crowded enough to resemble a Saturday night despite it being Wednesday. Hardin and Tessa wait in his car until a sleek black town car arrives with Kimberly and Christian. Hardin calls Christian a rich bastard and squeezes Tessa’s thigh before they get out, a brief gesture of intimacy amid the evening’s show of wealth.
A bouncer lets them past a velvet rope, and Kimberly leads the group through the dark interior while Christian wanders off. Gray stone blocks serve as tables, black couches are set with white cushions, and red roses provide the room’s only strong color. The soft music makes the club feel both relaxing and stimulating. The setting establishes an elegant, controlled night out before the unexpected encounter unsettles it.
An Unexpected Encounter
Later, Hardin searches the club for Tessa’s sparkling dress and Kimberly’s bright blond hair. He finds them at the main bar with Christian, Max, and another man. Tessa’s posture makes her seem nervous. As another man joins the group, one of the men begins to look familiar to Hardin; when Tessa turns toward him, her wary eyes direct Hardin’s attention to the guest. She introduces him as Professor Soto, her teacher in World Religion.
Near the front of the club, Tessa stops after spotting a man with black hair styled to stick up wildly. Hardin recognizes him as Zed, and the fact that Tessa has noticed him too confirms that the sight is not simply a product of Hardin’s paranoia. Hardin hisses, “Why the fuck is he here? Did you tell him you were coming to the club?” Tessa emphatically denies telling Zed, and Hardin reads her wide eyes as evidence that she is being honest.
Leaving Together
Hardin takes Tessa by the arm and guides her toward the door, wanting to get away from Zed. Zed gives Tessa a parting “See you around” before following another man toward the stage. Hardin rushes outside into the cold air, and Tessa follows, insisting, “I didn’t know he was coming here! I swear.”
Hardin unlocks the car and opens the passenger door for her. He says he knows, trying to silence her explanation and talk himself down from going back inside. Once he is beside her in the car, he asks her to drop the subject because he does not want to ruin the night. Tessa agrees. The encounter does not resolve Hardin’s jealousy, but it ends without the confrontation he has been tempted to start: he and Tessa leave together, and he makes an effort to contain his reaction.
